A deadly collision on Kenya’s Kisumu–Busia highway has claimed lives and left multiple passengers injured, as a Royal Liner bus was struck by a trailer attempting to overtake on a sharp bend, the media reports.

Regional traffic officer Peter Maina confirmed that at least one passenger died and six were seriously hurt when the bus collided with a flatbed trailer and a fuel tanker just past Lela in Maseno, near the sharp corner of the A12 highway.

Video footage circulating online shows the damage: the driver’s side of the bus is crushed and twisted. Rescuers, including police officers, quickly arrived at the scene to help survivors and bring some order to the chaos.

This tragedy follows a string of catastrophic crashes in the same region in just the past week. On August 8, a bus carrying mourners overturned at Kisumu’s Coptic Roundabout, killing at least 23 people, according to regional traffic authorities.

A day later, on the Mai Mahiu–Narok route, an ENA Coach bus was struck from behind by a trailer whose brakes failed. The crash resulted in two deaths and many injuries.

In response to the rising toll of road accidents, NTSA and the National Police Service have pledged stricter enforcement. Measures include speed checks, clamping down on overloaded vehicles, curbing unlicenced route operations, and stepping up anti-drunk-driving campaigns.

As investigators work to piece together the exact sequence of events, this devastating collision underscores a broader, troubling pattern of road safety lapses across the nation.
