In a major boost for home-based healthcare services in Kenya, The Nairobi Hospital has rolled out a home blood collection service targeting critically ill and vulnerable patients.
This groundbreaking initiative is designed to serve those who face difficulty visiting hospital facilities—such as the chronically ill, pregnant women, children, and people living with disabilities—by allowing them to receive essential diagnostic tests from the comfort of their homes.
Bringing the Lab to Your Doorstep
During the official launch at the hospital’s Nairobi laboratory, hospital executives detailed how the service will function. Once a request is made, trained phlebotomists will be dispatched to collect blood and body fluid samples from patients' homes.
The goal? Improve patient-centered care, reduce barriers to essential services, and make diagnostics more accessible.
“This is more than just convenience—it’s a commitment to healthcare equity,” said Felix Osano, CEO of The Nairobi Hospital. “Our home blood collection service ensures that patients—whether at home or at work—receive timely, professional care without disrupting their lives.”
Affordable and Confidential
The service is designed to be both affordable and secure. According to Dr Rahul Zode, Chief Pathologist at the hospital, the collection fee is just KES 200 per visit, subject to insurance provider approvals.
“All patients are eligible,” he said. “We’ve prioritised affordability and confidentiality. Reports will be password-protected and delivered via email, with optional hard copies available.”
The hospital will also offer support for insurance approvals to ease the process for patients and families.
How to Request the Service
Patients can schedule home sample collection through:
-
A dedicated phone line
-
A designated email address
(The hospital has promised to share official contact details for bookings shortly.)
Once confirmed, a certified lab professional will arrive equipped to collect samples safely and efficiently.
A Win for Patient-Centered Healthcare
The Nairobi Hospital’s new home collection service reflects a growing trend in decentralised, patient-first healthcare—where care comes to you, rather than the other way around. It’s a significant step forward in embracing modern solutions to long-standing healthcare access issues.
