The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has released a clear step-by-step process for applying for the new generation number plates, urging Kenyans to act quickly as the August 29 deadline draws closer.

The urgency follows a circular dated May 21, which directed all government ministries to begin fitting official vehicles with second-generation plates without delay.

Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has warned that vehicles failing to comply with the directive by the set deadline will be impounded.

“Failure to adhere to this directive will result in enforcement action, including the impoundment of vehicles,” the circular stated.

How to Apply for the New Generation Number Plates

To help ease the rush, NTSA outlined the following procedure for applicants:

  1. Log in to the TIMS Portal
Use your eCitizen credentials or personal NTSA profile to access the TIMS portal.

  2. Select Vehicle Registration
On the dashboard, choose “Vehicle Registration” and then click “Apply for Reflective Plate.”

  3. Choose Vehicle Type
Indicate the category of the vehicle you’re applying for and proceed.

  4. Select Application Reason
Choose “New Generation Plate” and upload required documents (in PDF), including:

    • Vehicle logbook

    • Photos of front and rear plates

  5. Pick Plate Shape
Choose between square or oblong plates, depending on your vehicle’s design.

  6. Set Notification Preference
Most users opt for SMS notifications. You’ll also select a preferred collection center and submit the ID number of the person collecting the plates.

  7. Make Payment
Pay Ksh 3,050 via the NTSA portal's integrated system. After successful payment, you’ll receive an SMS with pickup details.

NTSA Moves to Ease Application Backlog

Speaking during a tree-planting drive in Nyandarua County on Tuesday, May 3, NTSA’s Director of Road Safety Andrew Kiplagat confirmed that the agency has ramped up operations to manage the surge in applications.

“We have implemented several measures to fast-track both application and approval, ensuring timely issuance despite the growing demand,” Kiplagat said.

With time ticking toward the August 29 deadline, motorists are urged not to wait until the last minute. Whether you're a public servant or private vehicle owner, failure to upgrade to the new plates may leave your car off the road.
