US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman has responded to mounting online criticism following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 US Presidential Election. Some Kenyans have called for her resignation due to what they perceive as her close ties to President William Ruto’s administration, but Whitman affirmed her commitment to her role.
In a statement on November 7, Whitman expressed her dedication to advancing US-Kenya objectives, including prosperity, security, and democratic values. “As with all US ambassadors, I serve at the request of the President. The American people have spoken, and a new President will be inaugurated in January. Meanwhile, my team and I continue to work on advancing our nations’ shared goals,” Whitman noted.
Whitman emphasized that US-Kenya relations have grown stronger over the past 60 years, a trend she expects to continue under Trump’s administration. “The relationship between the United States and Kenya has matured and enjoys bipartisan support from leaders in both Washington and Nairobi. Our ties have never been stronger, and I am confident this positive trajectory will continue,” she added.
In response to Trump’s election win, President William Ruto also extended his congratulations, acknowledging Trump’s leadership and vision. Ruto expressed Kenya’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the US, focusing on mutual interests such as trade, innovation, peace, security, and sustainable development.
