Orwoba: Mwangaza's Fate Would Differ with More Women Senators

Governor Kawira Mwangaza might have survived the impeachment if more women were elected as senators, according to Senator Gloria Orwoba.

Following the Senate's decision to uphold Mwangaza’s impeachment, Orwoba criticized those who supported the governor’s removal.

"Defend the removal all you want, but that doesn't change the grounds for impeachment. The truth is, if there were more elected women Senators sitting in that chamber, the outcome would be different. That's a fact! G7 is now G6… Congrats patriarchy," Orwoba stated.

She emphasized that politics is a game of numbers, urging women in Kenya to join politics to ensure their safety and representation.

"As long as there are few women in leadership, patriarchy will never come to an end, and women will always face challenges," Orwoba added in a subsequent post on X.

Orwoba's remarks came after the Senate voted to uphold Mwangaza’s impeachment. In the vote, 26 senators supported the first charge of gross violation of the constitution and other laws, while 14 senators abstained, and four voted in her favor.

On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators voted for impeachment, two against, and 14 abstained. The third charge, abuse of office, was upheld by 27 senators, with one voting against and 14 abstaining.

Most of the senators who abstained are affiliated with Opposition parties. This marked Mwangaza's third impeachment attempt to reach the Senate since she was elected in August 2022.
