Prime Cabinet Secretary and CS Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has reported that at least 316 Kenyans have died while working in the Gulf States since 2002.

Speaking before the Senate plenary on Wednesday, Mudavadi provided details on the spread of these fatalities across six of the eight Gulf states.

"The records we have show that the total number of Kenyans who have lost their lives in the Gulf region is 316," he stated.

The breakdown of deaths includes:

  • Saudi Arabia: 166 deaths
  • Qatar: 58 deaths
  • United Arab Emirates (UAE): 51 deaths
  • Iraq: 25 deaths
  • Bahrain: 10 deaths
  • Kuwait: 6 deaths
  • Oman and Iran: Zero deaths

Mudavadi also noted that approximately 416,548 Kenyans are currently working in these states, with the highest number in Saudi Arabia at 310,266. The distribution in other states is as follows:

  • Qatar: 66,025 Kenyans
  • UAE: 23,000 Kenyans
  • Bahrain: 8,000 Kenyans
  • Oman: 5,392 Kenyans
  • Kuwait: 3,515 Kenyans
  • Iran: 200 Kenyans
  • Iraq: 150 Kenyans

However, Mudavadi mentioned the difficulty in providing the identities of these individuals due to the lack of registration with Kenyan missions and frequent movement between countries.

"Kenyans in these territories exhibit high movement between various states. The numbers given therefore constitute periodic statistics derived from our missions in these countries, further corroborated through official sources of the host governments. It should be noted that not all Kenyans register with our missions abroad despite being sensitized on the importance of such registrations, hence sometimes it is difficult to have very precise data," Mudavadi explained.
