Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has defended the proposed Ksh.1.2 billion budget allocation for renovations in the 2024/2025 financial year, citing long-term neglect of his official premises.
The budget proposal, presented to Parliament on Wednesday, includes Ksh.460.4 million for refurbishing the Harambee Annex offices and Ksh.660 million for the official Karen residence. Additionally, Ksh.250 million is earmarked for combating alcohol and substance abuse.
Njeri Rugene, head of the Deputy Presidential Communication Service, criticized the media for misrepresenting the budget details. She clarified that the Ksh.300 million is allocated for renovating the Harambee House Annex office, the Karen residence, and the Mombasa residence, all of which have faced neglect over the past 15 years, impacting their habitability, safety, and security.
The statement also addressed the request for Ksh.100 million to purchase new vehicles, highlighting that the Deputy President's office has relied on outdated, high-maintenance vehicles for the past decade, hindering efficient service delivery.
During a presentation to the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security, a representative from the Deputy President’s Office emphasized the urgent need to address alcohol and substance abuse, labeling it a national security threat. Patrick Mwangi, the representative, noted the involvement of the Deputy President’s spouse, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, in this initiative due to its significant impact on national well-being.
