Kennedy Ng'ondi, the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, ignited a storm of criticism online after a video surfaced showing him seemingly pressuring a Muslim female colleague to shake his hand and hug him during an office birthday celebration.
In the footage, Ng'ondi, surrounded by colleagues singing "Happy Birthday," approaches the woman and urges her to greet him properly, despite her apparent discomfort. As he insists, other male colleagues join in, amplifying the pressure on the woman.
"Today, greet me and wish me a happy birthday!" Ng'ondi commands, reaching out his hand towards her. "It's my birthday..."
Amidst shouts from behind urging her to comply, the woman reluctantly stands, visibly flustered as Ng'ondi persistently attempts to embrace her.
The video, shared by popular blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, quickly drew condemnation, with many condemning Ng'ondi's actions as a violation of the woman's autonomy.
"This is physical assault, a blatant infringement on the woman's rights," tweeted prominent lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi, suggesting potential legal repercussions.
Hotelier Mohammed Hersi denounced Ng'ondi's behavior as uncultured and urged the woman to pursue legal action against the Speaker.
Politician Billow Kerrow echoed the sentiment, labeling Ng'ondi's actions as uncouth and advocating for the woman to seek legal recourse.
Nyakundi criticized Ng'ondi's conduct, questioning why such behavior is tolerated from a figure in leadership.
Environmental activist Nusrat Muhammed condemned the incident as harassment and emphasized the importance of standing up against such behavior.
Public speaker Hussein Abdulrazaq urged women to assert themselves in such situations and called for Ng'ondi's impeachment.
The incident has sparked broader conversations about workplace harassment and the importance of respecting boundaries and religious beliefs.
