Kenya Power has issued a cautionary statement regarding potential power blackouts and disruptions amidst ongoing heavy rainfall across the country. The electricity distribution company highlights the risk of damage to power distribution infrastructure caused by floods and fallen power lines due to the inclement weather.

The warning coincides with a heavy rainfall alert issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department covering various regions effective from Tuesday, April 2nd. The forecast predicts heavy downpours in Central and Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Southeast lowlands, Coast, Northeast, and Northwest between April 2nd and April 8th.

Authorities advise citizens to prepare for potential flooding in these areas, with high temperatures anticipated in several counties. Daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C over the next seven days, with elevated night-time temperatures, particularly along the Coast and in North-Eastern Kenya.

As Kenya enters the long rain season, residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant for potential floods and to avoid driving or walking in moving water. Additionally, caution is advised against seeking shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.

The cautionary statement from Kenya Power aligns with ongoing governmental efforts to mitigate power disruptions nationwide. Members of Parliament are spearheading reforms aimed at diversifying the electricity meter market and introducing competition into the electricity distribution sector, with initiatives to permit private entities to import power from neighbouring countries. These reforms aim to enhance efficiency and reliability in Kenya's power supply infrastructure.
