Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has disclosed the counsel he offered Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka amidst escalating discussions about his potential succession to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking at a funeral service in Machakos County on Friday, February 23, the ODM Secretary-General unveiled his advice to Kalonzo, urging him to maintain his alliance with Raila amidst attempts to fracture the coalition.
Sifuna emphasized that Kalonzo's alignment with Raila would position him favorably should the former premier decide to endorse a successor before the 2027 elections.
Asserting the centrality of Raila's directives within ODM, Sifuna indicated that the party would follow his lead on the issue of succession. Nonetheless, he hinted at Kalonzo's prospects of succeeding Raila ahead of the 2027 polls.
"I advised him to remain close to Raila because ODM only follows directives from one source, and that's Raila. Last week, Kalonzo mentioned he would assign me the Foreign Affairs docket. But who has the authority to allocate government roles?" Sifuna questioned.
However, Sifuna cautioned leaders allied with Kalonzo against pressuring Raila to endorse him, emphasizing ODM's aversion to external influence in decision-making processes.
"The essence of ODM lies in avoiding external pressure on Raila. Kenyans anticipate Azimio to assume leadership. Kalonzo must also guard against attempts to sow discord within our coalition. We're witnessing efforts to divide us through discussions on Raila's succession," he warned.
With Raila's potential bid for the Africa Union Commission (AUC) seat, discussions on succession have gained momentum. If elected, Raila's reduced involvement in national politics could catalyze intensified succession deliberations.
However, ODM has dismissed such speculations, affirming Raila's continued influence in Kenya's political landscape.
