The scheduled burial of marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum has been brought forward from Saturday, February 24, to Friday, February 23.
According to a family spokesperson, the decision was made to accommodate the commitments of President William Ruto.
The family spokesperson noted that President Ruto's itinerary included a trip to Namibia, prompting the adjustment in the burial date.
While State House did not confirm President Ruto's trip, the family asserted that the burial would be a State function and expected the President's presence.
Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba had previously announced that his predecessor, Hage Geingob, would be laid to rest on February 24, following his passing on February 4.
President Ruto expressed condolences for the late Namibian president, praising him as a leader dedicated to African unity and global recognition. He also announced Kenya's intention to mourn Geingob by flying flags at half-mast.
President Ruto has been personally committed to ensuring a dignified farewell for Kiptum, who tragically lost his life in a road accident on Monday, February 12.
Mourning Kiptum as an exceptional athlete who made significant contributions to the world of sports, President Ruto emphasized the young athlete's remarkable achievements in various international competitions.
"He was only 24 yet, as a hero, triumphed in Valencia, Chicago, London, and in other top competitions. Kiptum was our future," President Ruto eulogized following the news of Kiptum's passing.
Additionally, President Ruto honored Kiptum's final wish by overseeing the construction of a house for his grieving family.
