In the aftermath of murder suspect Kelvin Kinyanjui Kang'ethe's audacious escape from custody, four police officers at Muthaiga Police Station have faced swift interdictions, with two additional supervisors reassigned to new posts, announced Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei in a press briefing on Friday.

The disciplinary measures come in response to the alarming breach of security that allowed Kang'ethe to flee from the confines of police custody on Wednesday, February 7, around 5:30 pm. Adding to the intrigue, Kang'ethe's lawyer, John Ndegwa Maina, was promptly detained following the escape, although subsequent investigations have verified his legitimate status as the suspect's legal counsel.

Maina's frequent visits to Kang'ethe prior to the escape raised eyebrows, fueling speculation about his role in the incident. However, Bungei clarified that preliminary inquiries have confirmed his authentic representation of the fugitive.

Kang'ethe stands accused of the brutal murder of a 31-year-old Kenyan-born woman in Whitman, Massachusetts, whose lifeless body was discovered inside a vehicle at Boston's Logan Airport in November of the preceding year. Arrested in Nairobi, Kang'ethe faced a court hearing where detectives were granted a 30-day detention period for further investigations, with plans for extradition to the US where he faces murder charges.

The court's decision to detain Kang'ethe at Muthaiga Police Station underscored the gravity of the offense, with no objections raised by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Investigations have revealed that the suspect and the deceased shared residency in Massachusetts and were involved in a relationship marred by violence, culminating in the fatal attack that claimed the woman's life.

As authorities strive to apprehend Kang'ethe and address the security lapses that facilitated his escape, the case serves as a stark reminder of the imperative for rigorous law enforcement and accountability within the criminal justice system, lest further tragedies ensue.
