The Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) has taken a decisive step towards easing the financial burden on its citizens by announcing a substantial reduction in phone call rates.

In an official statement released on Friday, the Authority revealed that the existing call rate of Ksh0.58 per minute would be lowered to Ksh0.41 per minute.

This revised rate is set to be universally applicable across all mobile networks, serving as the maximum allowable charge. CA clarified that the reduction was a response to the challenging economic conditions faced by many Kenyans.

"The new rate is a reflection of the current economic climate, ICT market dynamics, and the imperative to strike a balance between encouraging investment and safeguarding consumer interests. Lower Mobile Termination Rates (MTRS) and Fixed Termination Rates (FTRS) translate into more affordable calling rates for consumers.

"This decision is poised to yield positive outcomes for both consumers and operators. Users will gain access to a diverse range of cost-effective services across networks, while operators will enjoy increased price flexibility for the development of more budget-friendly products," stated the authority.

The adjusted rates are scheduled to come into effect on March 1, 2024, and will remain applicable for a duration of two years before undergoing a thorough review. It's important to note that these reduced rates are exclusively applicable to calls made within the borders of Kenya.

Despite the call rate adjustment, the current SMS termination rate will remain unchanged at Ksh0.05 per SMS.

In preparation for the implementation of the new rates, the CA has mandated all operators to amend their Interconnection Agreements in accordance with the Determination and submit their Deeds of Variation to the Authority by February 1, 2024.

In response to this directive, various telecommunication companies are expected to unveil their revised call rates. With the maximum rate capped at Ksh0.41 per minute, some companies may choose to set even lower charges, promising increased affordability for phone services in Kenya.
