Ruto Names Lukoye Atwoli as Chair of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital Board

President William Ruto has appointed Professor Lukoye Atwoli as the non-executive chairperson of the board of directors at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital. This announcement was made through a gazette notice released on Friday, November 3.

According to the notice, Lukoye, who is the son of Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) leader Francis Atwoli, will serve in this role for a three-year term, commencing from November of this year.

The notice reads, "In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act and Paragraph 6 (1) (a) of the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital Order, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Lukoye Atwoli as the non-executive chairperson of the board of directors of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital."

Lukoye Atwoli is a distinguished professor renowned for his expertise in mental health research. He currently holds two important positions as the Dean of Aga Khan's Medical College and as a co-chair of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Board on Global Health. Notably, he was recently elected as an international member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), based in Washington DC, United States.

In other notable appointments, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa has been named as the Chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology, a role he will hold for a five-year term.

Former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aspirant for the Bobasi constituency seat, Lucas Mogoa, has been appointed as a member of the State Corporation Advisory Committee. He will serve in this position for a three-year term, effective from November 1, 2023.

Additionally, former Ijara Member of Parliament, Sophia Abdi Noor, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Council for Children Services for a three-year term, lasting until November 3, 2026, according to the notice.
