In a devastating incident, two officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) lost their lives on Monday when their vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The officers were en route to Garissa to provide security for candidates taking the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.

Reports confirmed that the tragic event occurred on the Dadaab-Garissa road at Ege Dam. In addition to the fatalities, several other officers sustained injuries and were urgently transported to Dadaab Hospital for medical attention. Some of them were in critical condition due to the severity of the attack.

The front part of the vehicle was significantly damaged as a result of the explosion. The incident is suspected to be the work of Al Shabaab militants who have been responsible for numerous attacks in the northern region of the country.

These Al Shabaab attacks in the northern areas have posed a persistent threat, resulting in the loss of innocent Kenyan lives. In response to these security challenges, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Defense counterpart Aden Duale have vowed to take decisive action against those responsible for the attacks.

Notably, in October, Kindiki published the names and photos of the 35 most wanted terrorists who have been linked to various attacks in Kenya.

As the nation commences its national examinations, various challenges have emerged, particularly in areas affected by heavy rainfall, hindering the transportation of examination materials.

In a show of support and encouragement, President William Ruto and Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu visited a school in Kiambu County on Monday to offer prayers and motivational words to the pupils before they embarked on their exams.

"Be confident and do your best. Carry out the exam knowing very well we have an opportunity for each and every child of Kenya as you move to the next stage," President Ruto emphasized during his visit.
