Iten, August 22, 2023 - The tragic death of Rwandese athlete Rubayita Siragi in Iten last week has taken a new turn as police and roommates of the deceased shed light on a complex love triangle involving a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student.
Keiyo North OCPD Tom Makori addressed the press on Monday, disclosing that investigators are probing a suspect who is currently in custody for allegedly committing the crime. The motive is believed to be connected to a rekindled relationship between the KMTC student and the deceased athlete.
Police records indicate that the athlete and the young woman had broken up last year. However, in December 2022, the KMTC student initiated a new relationship with the suspect who is now the prime suspect in the murder case.
According to Makori, "The suspect, who assaulted the athlete, had entered into a relationship with the girl. It was suspected that the suspect was the girl's boyfriend from December (2022), but the KMTC student was reconnecting with the Rwandese."
Contrary to the police's assertion, Siragi's roommates have disputed claims of a split between the athlete and the lady. One of the roommates, Noel Hitimana, maintained that the couple's love remained intense and denied any separation and subsequent rekindling.
"We left them (at the hostels) on some days because we trusted him and we thought they would get married. I know they had not separated because we would have known," Hitimana stated, adding that they had been together for over two years.
The body of the deceased was discovered along a road in Iten, showing signs of assault. His friends mentioned that he had been preparing to return to his home country before the tragic incident occurred.
Initial reports indicated that Siragi and the suspect engaged in a physical altercation before his body was found. Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the deceased's body has been transferred to Iten referral hospital's mortuary for further examination.
