Raila Warns 'Rogue' US Ambassador Meg Whitman Against Interference in Kenya's Affairs

Kenya's prominent opposition leader, Raila Odinga, took a stern stance against the US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, cautioning her to refrain from meddling in the country's internal matters. Odinga, who leads the Azimio la Umoja coalition, issued the warning during his address to delegates at the Devolution Conference in Eldoret on August 17, 2023.

Odinga, a veteran politician who secured second place in the fiercely contested 2022 presidential elections, went on to label Ambassador Whitman as a 'rogue' diplomat. He firmly declared, "We want to tell the rogue ambassador to leave Kenyans alone."

The opposition leader acknowledged the significance of recent anti-government protests, asserting that they had contributed to the ongoing National Dialogue between the government and opposition. He emphasized that the dialogue, co-chaired by former vice-president Kalonzo Musyoka and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah, had been facilitated by the demonstrations.

In a clear message to the US Ambassador, Odinga remarked, "Tell the rogue ambassador (that) Kenya is not the United States, Kenya is not a colony of the United States. Keep your mouth shut."

Furthermore, Odinga, who has persistently challenged the outcome of several elections since 2007, issued a warning that he would lead a petition to have Ambassador Whitman recalled if she continued to involve herself in Kenya's internal affairs.

These strong statements from Odinga emerged a day after Ambassador Whitman, speaking at the same event, praised the 2022 elections and lauded Kenya's democratic progress and infrastructure development.

The Ambassador commended Kenya's democratic maturity during the 2022 polls, stating, "Kenya held what many analysts and commentators say was the freest, fairest, and most remarkable election in Kenyan history." Her remarks earned her a standing ovation from senior government officials, including President William Ruto.

However, Odinga and the opposition took issue with Ambassador Whitman's comments, as he has consistently contested the outcome of the 2022 elections, citing alleged irregularities. His criticism of her remarks exemplifies the tension between political factions and the potential impact of external statements on domestic political dynamics.

As Odinga and Ambassador Whitman engage in a war of words, the incident underscores the delicate balance between international diplomacy and respecting a nation's sovereignty. The ongoing friction also raises questions about the role of foreign diplomats in commenting on a country's internal affairs, particularly during politically sensitive times.
