Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has stated that Azimio leader Raila Odinga will bear responsibility for any destruction of property and loss of life that may occur during the Saba Saba protest. The opposition leader has called for nationwide rallies on Saba Saba Day to protest the new tax measures implemented by President William Ruto.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Senator Cherargei emphasized that the government is committed to protecting the lives and property of Kenyans. He urged that organizers of the Azimio-OKA demonstrations, including Raila, should be held accountable for any harm caused during the protests.

Raila Odinga's rally aims to pressure President William Ruto into repealing the Finance Act 2023. However, some groups have called for the opposition to cancel the demonstrations. The Kikuyu Council of Elders, led by national chairman Wachira Kiago, appealed to Raila to abandon the plans, expressing concerns about potential divisions in the country.

On the other hand, human rights activists in Mombasa County have announced their support for Raila's call to hold peaceful demonstrations. Bradley Ouna, an activist from the Concern Citizen Kenya organization, stated that the procession will begin at Pembe za Ndovu and proceed to Treasury Square, where they will present their petition to the county commander.

Ouna also mentioned that they had notified the Central police Officer Commanding Station (OCS) about the planned protest, and they received cooperation and approval to proceed with the demonstration. The activists intend to use the occasion to celebrate the freedom fighters of Kenya, particularly those who contributed to the country's second liberation.

As tensions rise ahead of the Saba Saba protests, the diverging opinions on the demonstrations reflect the ongoing political landscape and differing perspectives on how to address the concerns raised by President Ruto's new tax measures. The upcoming rallies have sparked both support and apprehension, highlighting the need for peaceful and constructive dialogue to address the issues at hand.
