Peter Otieno, a driver present on the Kericho-Nakuru highway during the fateful incident, has come forward to share a harrowing account of the events that led to the devastating Londiani Tragedy. The accident, which occurred on Friday, June 30, claimed the lives of over 55 people after a trailer collided with seven matatus and bodabodas at the Londiani Junction.

According to Otieno, who was driving on the opposite side of the road, he noticed the trailer speeding towards his direction, prompting him to slow down to avoid a collision. However, the driver behind him made a tragic miscalculation, assuming that Otieno had stopped to make a purchase at the busy market, and proceeded to overtake him. Unfortunately, this assumption proved fatal, resulting in a collision between the vehicle and the trailer.

"I had arrived at the junction when I saw the trailer speeding, prompting me to slow down to avoid the accident. The driver behind me decided to overtake, and that's how the collision occurred," Otieno explained.

Otieno narrowly escaped death himself, but he witnessed the devastation caused by the crash. He described seeing over 20 lifeless bodies on the ground, with more trapped under the trailer.

Another eyewitness, the husband of a trader working at the market, recalled how the trailer lost control and veered towards the market area. Thankfully, his wife managed to escape to safety upon seeing the vehicle approaching at high speed.

Reports indicated that the trailer, transporting goods and heading to Kericho Town, lost control at the Londiani Junction, leading to the tragic accident.

President William Ruto expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and assured them that the government would provide support. He also urged motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads, particularly during the heavy rainfall being experienced.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) released data on Thursday, June 29, revealing that a total of 2,124 fatalities had been recorded between January and June 2023. Pedestrians accounted for a significant portion of these fatalities, with 729 lives lost.

The driver's account sheds light on the critical moment that led to the devastating Londiani accident, emphasizing the importance of cautious driving and adherence to traffic rules to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
