Former Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha died on Tuesday, January 24.
According to the family, he suffered a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.
The hospital's Chief Executive Officer James Nyamongo confirmed the demise, stating that Magoha breathed his last shortly after arriving at the facility.
"It is with great regret that we announce the sudden and untimely demise of Prof George Magoha this evening at the Nairobi Hospital.
"Magoha collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital's accident and emergency. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Kindly join me in condoling with his family," Nyamongo announced.
The body of the former Education Boss was moved to the Lee Funeral Home.
Magoha is survived by his wife Dr Barbra Magoha and his son Dr Michael Magoha.
His death comes barely a week after his appointment as a lecturer of medical surgery at the Maseno University School of medicine.
The former CS had just buried his brother, the late Prof Richard Magoha, who died in December 2022.
Magoha's last public appearance was when he handed over the functions of the Ministry of Education to his successor, Ezekiel Machogu.
A no-nonsense scholar, the former CS will be remembered for his reforms in the ministry, especially in dealing with examination malpractices and indiscipline in schools.
Under his reign as Education boss, he reduced the marking time frame in which the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
The accomplished academia played a key role in ensuring the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
He has had an illustrious career having served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi(UON) between 2005 and 2015 before he was appointed the chair of the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
