A 90-year-old man was on Tuesday, January 10, killed after being robbed of Inua Jamii funds in Makueni.

The man was attacked by the assailants shortly after leaving a bank in the Metava area where he had gone to withdraw the money he received through the Inua Jamii cash trasfer programme.

According to the local area chief Nicolas Mwonga, the assailants in the gruesome murder slit the man’s throat and got away with the money.

Mwonga added that the man would not have been able to alarm locals while being attacked because he was dumb.

Additionally, Mwonga reported that the man had been attacked and robbed three times before the Tuesday incident that led to his death.

Reports indicate that the 90-year-old lived on his own in Metava area and was therefore an easy target for criminals.

“I want to urge the locals to ensure that the aged in the area don't live alone because there will be people who will take advantage of them,” the chief added

A manhunt has been launched to find the suspects who are still at large and the area chief called upon the locals to help the authorities with their search.

“Their days are numbered and we will catch them soon,” the chief warned.

The Inua Jamii programme under the Ministry of Labour targets orphans and vulnerable children, older persons and persons with severe disabilities.

On Tuesday, January 10, Social Protection Principal Secretary (PS) Joseph Motari confirmed that a total of Ksh8.5 billion had bee disbursed for the programme.

Each beneficiary received Ksh8,000, which was in arrears for the period between July and November 2022 considering that each beneficiary is entitled to recieve a monthly stipend of Ksh2,000.
