The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Tuesday, July 19, published names of shortlisted candidates set to fill 14,460 vacancies across the country.
The commission had declared 5,000 new vacancies and a further 8,230 slots to replace teachers who had left the service through natural attrition.
Media reports indicated that over 356,000 tutors applied for the jobs – with post-primary teaching slots attracting the highest number of applicants after 219,311 teachers expressed interest in the 4,000 vacancies available.
Further, 136,833 primary school tutors applied for the 1,000 vacancies. The commission also received over 327,882 applications for the 8,230 vacancies left by teachers who had left through natural attrition.

The commission had initially advertised 386 positions with 114 for primary schools and 272 for secondary schools on contractual terms to fill the vacancies in Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir.
“To qualify for recruitment, a candidate should be a Kenyan citizen, be hailing from Garissa, Mandera or Wajir Counties, be teaching under Board of Management in Garissa, Mandera or Wajir Counties,” read part of the notice.
