Detectives have retrieved CCTV footage detailing the last moments of an 18-year-old woman found killed and dumped outside the GSU Recce station in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
Reports indicate that detectives investigating the gruesome murder of Esther Wambui retrieved CCTV from her workplace which showed that she left for home at 8.30 pm on Sunday, January 9.
Her husband, who is under police investigation, informed officers that he usually escorted Wambui to work due to insecurity in the area they lived in and he would also pick her up at the end of her shift.
The husband told investigators that he chaperoned Wambui to work at 5.40 am on Sunday given that it was dark and midway through, he returned home since the day had already broken.
The CCTV footage in the hands of the DCI sleuths showed Wambui leaving work for home at 8.30 pm on Sunday but Ngigi did not pick her up on that day as is the norm.
Detectives questioned the husband for not calling relatives or friends when Wambui did not return home from work. The sleuths further noted that the man did not call his wife’s workplace to inquire about her whereabouts.
Ruiru DCIO, Justus Ombati, stated that police suspect the markings on Wambui’s body may be a trick by the killers to mislead investigators.
“She died a painful death and we are piecing together her last moments, and as we speak, the husband is a person of interest. It is a complex matter but what I can say is that we are moving well with investigations,’’ Ombati told the media.
The body had ink writings on the chest, both palms and thighs which read: “Bwana ya mtu ni sumu” (Someone’s husband is poison). The writings, according to police, may have been made by the killers to insinuate that she was killed by another woman who suspected her of having an affair with her husband.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the woman had been killed elsewhere and the body dumped outside the GSU camp.
“It was reported by members of the public that there was a dead body in a briefcase which had been dumped near the service lane along the perimeter wall of the Recce Company Camp at Toll area M/R BJ755775 about 4km south of the station.
“Police officers visited the scene and confirmed that there was a body of an unknown African female adult in her early twenties who had been stashed in a nylon sack and put in a black suitcase with the hands tied at the back and both legs as well tied with manila ropes,” a police report read.
