Members of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) have been asked to contribute towards clearing a loan linked to the church-owned Milele Beach Hotel in Mombasa.
A PCEA minister appealed to members in a video posted on August 27, saying every contribution would help settle the outstanding debt.
“Every coin counts. Every one of what you do counts. Whatever you give matters,” the Reverend said.
The church currently puts the outstanding loan at about KSh700 million. This figure differs from the KSh811 million outstanding balance reported in 2025 during a legal dispute between the Presbyterian Foundation and the National Bank of Kenya (NBK).
The Presbyterian Foundation, which is wholly owned by PCEA and manages the church's property interests, is the entity linked to Milele Beach Hotel.
How the debt grew
The hotel was acquired by the PCEA Foundation in 2007 and was formerly known as Giriama Beach Hotel. Contemporary reports said the acquisition was financed by Equity Bank, with additional funds provided for renovations.
The later loan dispute with NBK involved financing for development at the property, including plans for luxury apartments. Court records show that the outstanding balance was KSh767.65 million as of December 2015, while Business Daily reported an outstanding balance of KSh811 million in January 2025.
Earlier reports had put the debt at about KSh727 million in 2016 and KSh761 million in 2019.
The Presbyterian Foundation was placed under receivership by NBK in December 2024, according to a Kenya Gazette notice. Kamal Anantroy Bhatt of Anant Bhatt LLP was appointed receiver and manager.
The church's latest appeal therefore marks another attempt to address the long-running financial problems surrounding the property.
Minister warns against politics
The Reverend also urged members not to be distracted by political debate surrounding the fundraising.
“Please do not listen to politics. You are giving to the King of the Church, who is Jesus Christ, and he is the ultimate giver. We can never outgive God,” he said.
