Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Wednesday left Kenyans in a state of confusion after he failed to name the top candidate in KCPE.

In his announcement, Machogu only named the marks scored by the top student.

In previous years, it has been a tradition that the Education CS names the top candidate in national examinations.

Machogu also noted that this was an improvement from the 2021 exam where the best candidate got 428 marks.

"In the 2022 KCPE Examination, overall performance improved compared to 2021 despite the difficult situation that faced this cohort of candidates. The mark of the highest candidate rose four points from 428 in 2021 to 431 in 2022," he said.

"Another positive indicator of better candidates’ performance was in the mean average performance."

He only gave a breakdown of how the students performed, and the number of students who scored marks in different ranges.

In the breakdown, 9,443 candidates scored between 400-500 marks, 307,756 scored between 300-399 marks, and 619,593 scored between 200-299 marks.

296,336 scored between 100-199 marks, while 724 scored between 0-99 marks.
