Mukami Kimathi, wife to the late Freedom fighter Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi is dead.
Mukami died while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital where she was rushed Thursday night with difficulties in breathing.
She died aged 96 years.
While confirming her demise, her daughter Everlyne Kimathis said her wish was to have the husband´s remains released from Kamiti Prison to and buried at a different place by the State.
Mukami was among the Mau Mau freedom fighters detained at the Kamiti Maximum Prison during the struggle for independence.
She was instrumental in the push that helped Kenya gain its independence from the colonialists.
Mukami recently received financial aid from President William Ruto's administration, which helped her clear a Sh1.3 million hospital bill.
She will be laid to rest at her Njambini home.
