Kalonzo Rules Out Ruto Alliance, Says They Will Meet at the Ballot

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has ruled out working with President William Ruto ahead of Kenya's 2027 general election, saying the two will face each other at the ballot.

Mr Kalonzo made the remarks on Thursday, July 30, after meeting members of the Linda Mwananchi movement at the SKM Command Centre.

He dismissed speculation that he could join President Ruto's political camp. He said his focus remained on the opposition's efforts to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration in the next election.

“I want to tell Mr William Ruto, please stop imagining that I can ever join you. We will meet at the ballot,” Mr Kalonzo said.

He accused the President's political camp of sending intermediaries to approach him. Mr Kalonzo did not identify the people he said had been sent to contact him.

“They're sending all kinds of emissaries,” he said, warning opposition figures against abandoning efforts to build a united political front.

“Anybody looking back will be a betrayer of national consciousness,” he added.

Mr Kalonzo also urged supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement to continue organising and reaching out to other political groups as the country moves towards the 2027 election.

“Reach out to everyone, including Wamalwa and Wamunyoro. We officially enter the election year in three days,” he said.

The Wiper leader also announced that the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya alliance would meet on Monday to discuss its political direction.

He said the alliance's council, chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and its executive were working on a strategy for the next phase of the opposition's political campaign.

“On Monday, we have a meeting. The council, chaired by Uhuru Kenyatta, and the executive, which I chair as party leader, have visualised the way forward,” Mr Kalonzo said.

He invited members of Linda Mwananchi to take part in the discussions after completing their registration process.

The remarks came a day after Wiper Patriotic Front said Mr Kalonzo remained committed to the United Alternative Government coalition. The party also rejected claims that he had opened talks with President Ruto over a possible political alliance.

Mr Kalonzo's comments add to the growing political activity ahead of the 2027 election, as parties and opposition groups weigh possible alliances and seek to consolidate their support.

For now, Mr Kalonzo's position is clear: he says he will not join President Ruto's camp and expects their political paths to meet at the ballot.
