Kenyatta University has appointed Prof John Okumu as its substantive Vice-Chancellor, marking the beginning of a new leadership chapter at one of Kenya's largest public universities.

The appointment, announced by the University's Council, took effect on July 27, with Prof Okumu succeeding Prof Paul Wainaina as the institution's seventh Vice-Chancellor.

The official appointment was confirmed during a ceremony at the university's main campus, where University Council Chairperson Clara Momanyi presented Prof Okumu with his letter of appointment in the presence of council members and the university's management team.

The transition comes as Kenyatta University seeks to strengthen its standing in higher education through teaching, research, innovation and community engagement while advancing its long-term strategic objectives.

Speaking after accepting the role, Prof Okumu thanked the University Council for its confidence in him and pledged to lead the institution through collaboration and openness.

"I am deeply honoured by the confidence the University Council has placed in me. I am committed to leading with humility, integrity, and openness as we work together to strengthen Kenyatta University's position as Kenya's premier university and a globally competitive institution," he said.

He also committed to working closely with staff, students and other stakeholders to promote academic excellence and strengthen the university's core mission.

The appointment brings to a close the tenure of Prof Paul Wainaina, who oversaw the university during a period marked by the expansion of academic programmes, research initiatives and institutional reforms.

Announcing the appointment, Council Chairperson Clara Momanyi said the university was confident that Prof Okumu's academic background and leadership experience would help steer the institution through its next phase of growth.

She said the new Vice-Chancellor would play a central role in reinforcing Kenyatta University's reputation in teaching, research, entrepreneurship, innovation and community service.

According to the University Council, the appointment reflects the institution's commitment to strong governance and sustained progress within Kenya's higher education sector.

The council added that the university remains focused on expanding its research output, strengthening partnerships and enhancing its contribution to addressing national and global challenges through innovation.
