Nairobi – 7 November 2025

Kenya’s anti-corruption agency has raided the homes of senior officials in the State Department for Sports as part of an investigation into the alleged embezzlement of KSh3.8 billion in public funds.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) confirmed that the early-morning raids, carried out across several counties, targeted both government officials and private businesspeople linked to the suspected fraud. Search operations took place in Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Nyeri, and Nanyuki, following warrants issued by the court.

“The operation, which was pursuant to court orders, is part of ongoing investigations at the State Department for Sports in relation to allegations of unlawful acquisition of KSh3,800,563,277 by senior officials,” the EACC said in a statement.

The alleged offences date back to the 2020/2021 and 2025/2026 financial years, during which officials are accused of conspiring to divert funds through irregular procurement deals.

Key Officials Under Investigation

Among those under investigation are a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Sports, a Deputy Accountant General from the Ministry of ASALs and Regional Development, an accountant from the State Department for Sports, and directors of private travel firms believed to have benefited from the scheme.

Preliminary findings suggest the funds were channelled through fraudulent tenders awarded to travel and logistics companies with close ties to ministry insiders.

During the operation, investigators reportedly recovered KSh3.58 million in cash, title deeds, and high-end vehicles, all believed to be linked to the corruption network. The seized materials are expected to serve as key evidence as the investigation progresses.

Evidence and Next Steps

All the suspects were later taken to the EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre in Nairobi to record statements. Officials said the inquiry will determine the extent of the scheme and whether the assets were purchased using proceeds of corruption.

“Upon completion of the inquiry, the outcome will inform appropriate action, including prosecution of any culpable persons and recovery of unexplained wealth or proceeds of corruption,” the agency said.

The EACC has intensified its operations in recent months, targeting high-ranking public officials accused of misusing public resources. The Sports Ministry probe adds to a growing list of corruption investigations within Kenya’s public sector — a recurring challenge despite repeated government pledges to enforce accountability.
