NAIROBI — Veteran lawyer and former Safina Party leader Paul Muite has launched a blistering attack on President William Ruto, accusing him of betraying public trust through dishonesty and corruption.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on October 25, 2025, Muite wrote, “The problem with a lying president is that even when he accidentally tells the truth, no one believes him. Everyone believes there’s a LOOTING objective in all his schemes — dams, stadiums, e-procurement, roads, etc. Tragic!”
The remark, sharp and scathing, adds to growing discontent over Ruto’s leadership and the management of public projects. Many Kenyans have voiced similar frustrations over what they see as inflated contracts and empty promises tied to the president’s development agenda.
Passing the Baton
Muite’s statement came just weeks after a symbolic handover ceremony at Ngong Racecourse on September 18, marking the end of his tenure as Safina Party leader. At the event, he formally transferred the party’s constitution, membership register, and a symbolic staff to businessman Jimi Wanjigi, calling on him to take a firm stand against corruption.
“There are things that cannot wait until the next elections. The corruption we are witnessing cannot wait for another two and a half years,” Muite said during the National Delegates Conference.
The event, charged with political symbolism, underscored Muite’s transition from party leadership to vocal activism. Clad in a Gen Z-inspired outfit, he urged young Kenyans to take to the streets if necessary, arguing that the fight against graft must begin immediately.
A New Safina Agenda
Wanjigi, now steering Safina’s next phase, echoed Muite’s urgency. He unveiled what he called the “Fist Agenda” — a reform blueprint centred on universal healthcare, free education, debt restructuring, and the election of OCPDs (Officer Commanding Police Divisions) to ensure police accountability.
“We cannot wait until 2027 to demand integrity in government,” Wanjigi said, describing the agenda as “a people’s fight to reclaim Kenya’s dignity.”
Mounting Pressure on Ruto
Muite’s criticism follows a recent wave of public dissent from other prominent figures. Former Attorney General Justin Muturi recently told Kameme FM that President Ruto was a “pathological liar.” Muturi, who previously served in Ruto’s administration, alleged that his son was abducted in 2024 by security officers acting on orders from the presidency — a claim State House has not addressed publicly.
Other political heavyweights, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have also distanced themselves from Ruto’s 2027 re-election push, signalling widening cracks within Kenya’s political elite.
For Muite, who has spent decades in law and politics, his latest salvo is more than a personal attack — it’s a reflection of what he describes as a national crisis of trust. As he put it, “Kenyans no longer believe what their president says. That’s the tragedy.”
