In the wake of the escape of 13 suspects from Gigiri Police Station on Tuesday, including Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in the Kware Murders, eight police officers have been interdicted. The suspended officers include the Gigiri Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) and the Officer Commanding Station (OCS).
The decision was made following an urgent visit by Acting Inspector General (IG) of Police Gilbert Masengeli and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohamed Amin, who arrived at the station shortly after news of the escape broke.
During an impromptu meeting, the police chiefs concluded that the escape was likely an "inside job." They questioned officers on duty at the time of the incident and inspected the cells where the suspects had been held.
"Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders, considering officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station," Acting IG Masengeli stated.
The escape was discovered on the morning of Tuesday, August 20, when suspects were expected to have their breakfast. Police Constable Gerald Mutuku, who was responsible for routine cell checks, and the canteen manager noticed the absence of 13 suspects and immediately raised the alarm.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin confirmed the escape during his visit, expressing disappointment over the incident but assuring the public that a manhunt had been launched to recapture the fugitives. "It is unfortunate this has happened, but we are pursuing the matter for action," he said.
The escapees reportedly cut through a wire mesh at the waiting bay before scaling the perimeter wall to freedom. Gigiri Police Station has since been declared a crime scene as the DCI conducts further investigations to gather clues that may aid in tracking down the fugitives.
