Activist Kasmuel McOure made a dramatic escape into the Nation Media Group (NMG) offices on Kimathi Street as police pursued him during the Nane Nane protests.

On Thursday afternoon, a video surfaced showing a visibly shaken McOure, accompanied by colleagues, seeking refuge inside the media house as police deployed teargas in the city to disperse protesters.

According to reports, McOure was the target of police officers when he fled into the building that houses both the Daily Nation newspaper and NTV. In the brief 11-second clip, McOure, dressed in his trademark suit, is seen sprinting towards the entrance of Nation Center, leaping over security barriers in his bid to escape arrest.

McOure was one of hundreds of youth who took to the streets of Nairobi for the Nane Nane protests. However, police had preemptively set up several roadblocks on key routes leading into the city, including Waiyaki Way at Kangemi and Thika Superhighway at Safari Park, in anticipation of the demonstrations.

As the youth converged on the Central Business District (CBD), they were met by a heavy police presence, which responded with teargas and arrests. McOure later disclosed that Sankara Kinuthia was among ten individuals arrested on Kimathi Street.

Amidst the chaos, reports also surfaced of police targeting media personnel. Some journalists were teargassed at the entrance of Nation Center, and Cecilia Ngunjiri, a reporter covering the protests, was reportedly injured by a police officer in the city.

Additionally, a security guard stationed on Kimathi Street was rushed to the hospital after allegedly being beaten by police for filming their actions as they cleared the street.

Citizen TV journalist Stephen Letoo, who was covering the protests, expressed his frustration, sharing footage of his tear-filled eyes. "How police today have turned to harm journalists at the CBD is totally unacceptable. Several scribes injured," he commented, tagging the Media Council of Kenya to take action.

At the time of publishing, protests were still ongoing in the city, with tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement remaining high.
