#RejectFinanceBill2024 Goes Global: US, Canada, Australia, and 7 Other Countries Join Movement

The proposed tax increases in the Finance Bill 2024 have sparked a global outcry, making the hashtag #RejectFinanceBill2024 one of the most trending topics worldwide with over 1.8 million posts.

The hashtag trended prominently in the United States, Canada, Qatar, and Dubai, UAE. Other countries where #RejectFinanceBill2024 gained traction included Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Australia, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. As demonstrations continue across Kenya, the hashtag is expected to trend in even more countries.

In the United States, #RejectFinanceBill2024 ranked as the fourth most trending topic below Happy Summer Solstice, Kendrick, and Good Thursday. In Canada, it ranked 19th but had more posts than all other topics combined.

The hashtag found particular resonance in Gulf countries due to the large Kenyan workforce in the Middle East. For instance, in Qatar and Dubai, #RejectFinanceBill2024 trended in second place.

In East Africa, Tanzania showed the highest solidarity with Kenyan demonstrators, with #RejectFinanceBill2024 being the top trending topic. Tanzanian Foreign Affairs Minister January Makamba praised the Kenyan protests as a hallmark of democracy.

In Uganda, #RejectFinanceBill2024 trended at number seven, below #WorldRefugeeDay, Croatia, Netherlands, and other topics. In Rwanda, it was the second most trending topic, following TVET and ahead of Kendrick.

In Ethiopia, #RejectFinanceBill2024 ranked as the fourth most trending topic, while in South Sudan, it was the most trending topic. In Australia, which has a significant Kenyan population, the hashtag ranked 18th.

Notably, #RejectFinanceBill2024 did not feature in the top 20 trending topics in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and the United Kingdom, despite these countries having large Kenyan communities and close ties with Kenya.
