KAA Announces JKIA Runway Closure After Faulty Plane Attempted Landing

On Tuesday, June 11, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announced the closure of a runway at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The announcement was made via a post on their social media platform X at 1:47 pm.

The closure was necessitated by a faulty plane that had attempted to land on the runway earlier that day. KAA confirmed that no injuries were reported, and efforts to remove the plane from the runway were underway.

“An aircraft incident has caused runway closure at JKIA. No injuries have been reported. Removal of the aircraft is underway,” KAA stated in a brief statement. They also urged affected passengers to remain calm as they worked to restore normal services at the airport.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused and will provide updates shortly,” the statement added.

The runway closure means that flights will be unable to access one of Africa's largest airports until the plane wreckage is cleared. This is not the first time JKIA has experienced such disruptions; in April last year, the runway was temporarily closed after a cargo plane aborted takeoff due to technical faults, blocking the runway.

Following the latest incident, KAA advised passengers to consult with their respective airlines for further directions.

"Our top priority is the safety of all passengers and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to resolve this situation as quickly and safely as possible," KAA's statement read.

"We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. We advise all passengers to contact their respective airlines for further information on the status of their flights," the statement concluded.
