President William Ruto has pledged a Ksh10,000 stipend to Kenyan households displaced by ongoing floods, aiming to provide immediate relief as the government addresses the crisis. During a visit to Mathare, Nairobi, Ruto announced the financial support, emphasizing its role in assisting families to secure temporary housing while long-term solutions are pursued.

The aid will be extended to the 40,000 households evacuated with the assistance of government administration officers, Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police, and National Youth Service. Ruto assured that measures were in place to prevent misappropriation of the funds, vowing to personally oversee their proper utilization and thwart any attempts by cartels to exploit the situation.

Attributing the flooding to climate change, Ruto highlighted Kenya's commitment to implementing strategies to mitigate future calamities. Immediate initiatives include tree planting in flood-prone areas like Mathare, with plans to address housing needs for those residing in vulnerable zones. To this end, Ruto announced the initiation of a tender to construct 5,000 affordable houses in Mathare, prioritizing displaced individuals upon completion.

Expressing gratitude to Mathare residents for their cooperation in relocating from flood-affected areas, Ruto commended their proactive response, which he credited with saving numerous lives. He affirmed the government's dedication to safeguarding citizens' well-being amidst environmental challenges, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in building resilient communities.
