In the wake of widespread flooding caused by heavy rains, the government has issued a stern warning to schools nationwide against resuming operations.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, speaking on the Hot 96 Breakfast show, emphasized the need for strict adherence to President William Ruto's directive.

President Ruto has instructed the Ministry of Education to defer the reopening of all schools "until further notice," citing the likelihood of escalating challenges in the days ahead.

Initially scheduled for April 29, 2024, the reopening date was postponed to May 6, 2024, due to disruptions from the ongoing heavy rains. "The Ministry of Education is directed to postpone the reopening of all schools in the country for the second term until further notice," reiterated Ruto on Friday.

Mwaura underscored that any violations of the directive would face consequences, as they would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

"Some of these schools are currently serving as rescue centers. So, upon reopening, where do they expect the relocated members of the public to go?" Mwaura questioned. He further mentioned the government's efforts in coordinating the relocation and evacuation of affected individuals to ensure temporary shelter for displaced persons.
