President William Ruto has convened an urgent session of the National Security Council at State House Nairobi this evening, in response to the Kenya Defence Forces' helicopter crash earlier today in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

The National Security Council is currently in an emergency session to address the aftermath of the Kenya Defence Forces helicopter crash in Kaben, Marakwet East.

The council is actively deliberating and is expected to issue a statement shortly, outlining details regarding the occupants of the helicopter, any casualties, and the subsequent actions to be taken.

The helicopter incident occurred late Thursday afternoon, with distressing online images showing the aircraft consumed by flames.

A reliable source has confirmed to the media that the National Security Council is presently in discussion and will imminently release a statement providing comprehensive information about the helicopter incident, including details about the individuals on board, any casualties, and the planned response.

Under Article 240 of the Constitution, the National Security Council comprises crucial figures including the President, Deputy President, relevant Cabinet Secretaries, the Attorney-General, the Chief of Kenya Defence Forces, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Service, and the Inspector-General of the National Police Service. The President presides over council meetings.

Empowered by national legislation, the National Security Council exercises supervisory control over national security organs and performs additional functions as mandated.

Initial reports indicate that the military helicopter may have been transporting Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla.

According to reports, the helicopter, carrying five individuals, was one of three aircraft departing from the Cheptulel area. It was the first to take off and tragically crashed just minutes later.
