The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) has initiated legal proceedings against Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, just a day after he issued threats regarding the ongoing doctor's strike.

Speaking to the press on Monday, April 15, Davji Atellah, the Secretary-General of KMPDU, announced the union's decision to sue the IG over his remarks and perceived threats.

Atellah reiterated the union's unwavering stance amidst the strike, emphasizing that no amount of intimidation or coercion would force doctors to halt their industrial action. He called for constructive dialogue between the union and the government to reach a viable solution.

Highlighting the constitutional rights of the doctors, Atellah criticized Koome's approach, stating that threats were counterproductive to resolving the impasse.

He further addressed concerns about the recruitment of foreign doctors, citing instances where such attempts had failed to meet standards set by the Kenyan Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), underscoring the irreplaceable expertise of local doctors.

Atellah urged the government to prioritize negotiations to address the grievances of medical practitioners and avoid putting patients' lives at risk due to the ongoing strike.

In response to IG Koome's remarks about the disruptive behavior of striking doctors, Atellah dismissed the notion of contravening the Constitution and emphasized the union's commitment to peaceful demonstrations.

The KMPDU chairperson, Abidan Mwachi, joined in condemning the IG's statements, urging President William Ruto to intervene and resolve the crisis, emphasizing the importance of peaceful negotiations in line with international labor standards.
