Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has revealed plans for the introduction of distinctive green number plates designated for electric vehicles (EVs) and electric motorcycles (e-motorcycles).

Addressing attendees at the e-mobility policy launch held at KICC on Wednesday, March 27, Murkomen announced the initiative aimed at promoting the adoption of eco-friendly transportation alternatives.

Under the new policy, owners of electric vehicles and e-motorcycles will be issued with specially designated green-colored number plates, facilitating easy identification on the roads.

Murkomen emphasized that existing vehicles with green number plates, typically used by county enforcement officers, would be required to apply for the newly designated plates.

"The introduction of green number plates for EVs and e-motorcycles aims to incentivize their uptake. We are also planning additional incentives such as prioritized parking spaces with reduced fees," Murkomen elaborated.

Furthermore, he revealed plans to install charging infrastructure at the Ministry headquarters, setting an example for other government agencies to follow suit in embracing electric mobility.

The CS hinted at the eventual extension of EV infrastructure across various ministries, underlining the government's commitment to environmental sustainability and technological advancement.

The rollout of the green number plates is imminent, pending the official signing of necessary documentation, Murkomen assured, signaling a significant step towards facilitating the transition to cleaner transportation solutions.

Government data indicates nearly 3,000 registered electric vehicles currently in the country, reflecting a growing interest in eco-conscious mobility options among Kenyan motorists.
