Kisii County Deputy Governor Robert Monda has been impeached by the county assembly, with 53 out of 70 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voting for his removal on Thursday afternoon.
The decision to impeach Monda came after allegations surfaced that he accepted a bribe to facilitate a resident's employment with GWASCO Water Company. Additionally, Monda faced accusations of abuse of office, which he denied during his appearance before the county assembly earlier in the day.
While addressing the media last week, Monda vehemently denied the corruption allegations, expressing confidence that any impeachment motion against him would fail. "I have never been accused of corruption in my life. It is only this time that it is coming in my history. I have sufficient answers and it is the responsibility of the holders of this motion to ensure they have a case to prosecute," he stated.
Despite his assertions, the majority of the county assembly voted in favor of Monda's impeachment, citing the seriousness of the allegations against him. One MCA abstained from voting, while 13 others opposed his dismissal.
Monda's impeachment marks a significant development in Kisii County's political landscape and underscores the assembly's commitment to upholding accountability and integrity in public office.
