Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga hinted at the possibility of stepping back from his position at the African Union Commission (AUC) to prioritize his ambition for the Kenyan presidency in the upcoming 2027 general election.

Raila made this revelation during the inauguration of the Marani Vegetable Aggregation and Marketing Centre in Kisii on Thursday, February 29. He emphasized that his pursuit of the AUC chairperson position would not deter him from seeking the presidency for a sixth time.

Addressing concerns about his commitment to local politics amidst international obligations, Raila asserted, "If Kenyans will need me for any other job I'll be available, I will take a break from the AU and come."

Raila's decision to potentially withdraw from the AU post arises from his enduring dedication to improving the welfare of Kenyans, as outlined in his 2022 manifesto. He affirmed his willingness to fulfill his promises, suggesting a return to domestic governance.

Notably, Raila dismissed assumptions that winning the AUC chairman position would lead to his retirement from Kenyan politics. He reassured supporters that he would manage his responsibilities effectively, even if it meant commuting between Addis Ababa and Kenya to engage actively in local affairs.

However, Raila's revelation may unsettle key figures within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, particularly leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, who have their sights set on the presidency.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto's support for Raila's AUC candidacy adds a layer of complexity to the political landscape, as both men navigate continental and domestic ambitions.
