A somber atmosphere enveloped Multimedia University as news emerged of a fourth-year student's tragic demise. On Sunday, the lifeless body of the student was discovered in a school hostel washroom, where he had taken his own life by hanging from the ceiling.
The unfolding of this tragic incident began with the student declining an invitation from friends to go out to Ongata Rongai. According to reports, he displayed no signs of distress and seemed calm and composed before his untimely death.
His friends had encouraged him to join them for a night out, but he chose to stay indoors. Around 2 a.m., he inquired if his friends would be returning soon before returning to his hostel.
Regrettably, this was the last interaction he had with his friends before he took this tragic step. Upon discovering his lifeless body, his friends promptly notified the school management, who in turn contacted the police. The student's remains were then transported to the morgue in preparation for his final farewell.
"This was so sudden; his friends were in shock. He was a cool person, minding his own business without bothering others. He was cheerful, sociable, and approachable, but this time, it seems he couldn't bring himself to share his problems," one of his friends commented.
In a message of condolence, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Paul Mbatia extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased and emphasized the significance of prioritizing mental health within the institution. A letter from the university revealed plans to address mental health among its students.
"We encourage you to reach out if you need to talk, seek support, or share your feelings. Our doors are open, and we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for every individual within the school," the letter stated.
Furthermore, the university's patron, Victor Mwania, called upon students to gather at the school stadium on Tuesday at noon to pay their respects to the departed student.
Text messages between the deceased and one of his friends indicated that he had previously sought help, expressing that he was going through a tough period.
"Currently at my lowest, will appreciate your prayers," he messaged, revealing that his struggles encompassed family issues, school challenges, financial difficulties, and mental health.
"It's a harsh world," one of the chats disclosed.
