On Friday, October 27, a tense situation unfolded on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway as a traffic police officer became embroiled in a heated dispute with a motorist. The incident was first brought to light by activist Boniface Mwangi, who shared a video capturing the confrontation.
In the video, the police officer, identified as Mwaniki, was seen provocatively seated in the motorist's car, and the argument was quickly intensifying. The frustrated driver adamantly pleaded with Officer Mwaniki to vacate the driver's seat and even made an attempt to forcibly remove him from the vehicle.
The cause of the altercation remained unclear. However, according to a passenger who recorded the video, the driver had pulled over along Mombasa Road and left the car's key in the ignition. It was at this point that Officer Mwaniki, stationed at Embakasi Police Station, entered the vehicle and began driving it. This prompted the driver to intervene, resulting in a physical struggle to eject the officer from the car.
The situation escalated as Mwaniki called for backup, and additional police officers arrived at the scene. The driver, who can be seen arguing with Mwaniki in the video, eventually fled the scene. The passenger who had recorded the incident was not spared from the ordeal and claimed to have been assaulted, arrested, and taken to Embakasi Police Station.
Mwaniki alleged that he and the driver had assaulted him and stolen Ksh 10,000 shillings. He threatened to charge the passenger with robbery with violence. The passenger expressed concern for the driver's safety, as Mwaniki reportedly vowed to exact a painful lesson on him for challenging the officer.
In the video, Officer Mwaniki demanded that the driver state his grievances while standing outside the car and warned him not to approach the vehicle.
"What do you want, Mwaniki?" the driver questioned.
Furthermore, the police officer insisted that the passenger, who had recorded the incident, surrender their phone before he would release the car to them.
