The president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Eric Theuri, has disclosed that Brian Mwenda, the university student accused of impersonating a lawyer, has presented himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) offices.

According to Theuri, the DCI has amassed substantial evidence against the impersonator as they continue their investigation.

"Brian Mwenda Njagi is now at DCI. We are going to ensure that he faces the full force of the Law. The evidence gathered so far points to several cases of forgery & identity theft," Theuri stated.

"Further inquiries are ongoing. We are working closely with the DCI team to conduct thorough & extensive investigations. This case will be a deterrent for future masqueraders."

Mwenda had been practicing law without a license, even representing ex-Mungiki leader, Maina Njenga, in televised court proceedings.

Theuri detailed the imposter's scheme when presenting the case to the DCI.

According to Theuri, Mwenda had assumed the identity of a genuine advocate, also named Brian Mwenda, and had been impersonating him.

The real Brian Mwenda became suspicious when he attempted to apply for a law practicing certificate but could not access his account on the LSK portal.

A subsequent investigation unveiled the fake lawyer's impersonation tactics.

The impostor had taken control of advocate Mwenda's account, altering his login credentials, profile picture, and workplace before applying for and paying for a practicing certificate.

However, LSK notes that the fake lawyer was unable to complete the application process because he lacked certain required documents.

"The LSK has commissioned an immediate review of the established protocols on the change of membership credentials to enhance the internal approval mechanisms," Theuri stated.

Meanwhile, Mwenda's father, Arnold Njagi, has stepped forward to defend him, asserting that he is a qualified lawyer. He explained that Mwenda pursued a diploma course in criminology in 2016, which paved the way for his enrollment at Strathmore University in 2017, where he graduated in 2020. In 2021, he joined the Kenya School of Law and completed his studies in December 2022.

Njagi mentioned that Mwenda's first legal case involved representing a family member in court, where he submitted an appeal application. However, there was no response to his application. Mwenda had been practicing law in Nairobi until recently when allegations surfaced regarding his qualifications.
