Nairobi, August 23, 2023 - Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has strongly condemned the arrest of former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, labeling it as a politically motivated witch hunt orchestrated to create an atmosphere of intimidation within the opposition circles. Speaking at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices on August 23, 2023, Sifuna criticized the authorities for allegedly denying opposition leaders access to their detained colleagues during the day.

Sifuna, a prominent figure within the opposition, expressed his concerns about the arrest of the former county governor, suggesting that it could be part of a larger political strategy aimed at suppressing opposition voices.

“This is all political fascinations," said Sifuna, highlighting the potential motives behind Oparanya's arrest. He also linked the arrest with President William Ruto's upcoming trip to Western Kenya, stating, "When the President last visited Western Kenya, residents over there asked tough questions and they tried arresting Vihiga Senator Osotsi whom they accused of attempting to disrupt a presidential function.”

Wycliffe Oparanya was apprehended by EACC officers for questioning following a day marked by dramatic events, including simultaneous raids on his residences in Kakamega and Nairobi. These searches lasted for hours and resulted in the seizure of what authorities deemed as vital documents and computer equipment.

This is the second time in less than two months that Oparanya has faced arrest. On a previous occasion, he was reportedly intercepted at his rural home, taken to Kakamega Police Station, and later released after providing a statement.

Oparanya, who also serves as the Deputy Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), is a prominent supporter of Azimio leader Raila Odinga. He is recognized for his two-term tenure as Kakamega Governor from 2013 to 2022, during which he focused on enhancing professionalism and hygiene standards within the town.

A respected figure in Western Kenya's political landscape, Oparanya has been actively involved in anti-government protests aimed at pressuring the government to address the high cost of living.

As the political scene continues to unfold, Oparanya's arrest has sparked discussions about the broader implications for the opposition movement and the ongoing dynamics within Kenya's political sphere.
