Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has offered reassurance to opposition governors, assuring them that their security details will soon be reinstated following their withdrawal ahead of recent anti-government protests.

Speaking at the Eldoret Sports Club on Friday during the official closure of the 10th Devolution Conference, Gachagua explained that the temporary withdrawal of bodyguards was a strategic move to allocate more officers to enhance security nationwide during the three-day demonstrations.

"We faced a shortage of officers, and the situation required more personnel on the ground to reinforce security across the country. The officers needed to confront those planning the protests, and once this is resolved, we will return your security detail," Gachagua stated.

The Deputy President also revealed that a comprehensive evaluation of the conduct and suitability of those whose firearms were temporarily withdrawn is ongoing.

"We are currently reviewing the behavior of those affected. Whether it is governors, presidential candidates, running mates, senior officials, or ministers, the possession of firearms is contingent on a correct temperament," he emphasized.

Addressing the concerns of the affected governors, Gachagua affirmed that security will be restored when indications suggest an end to the anti-government protests.

"As soon as these demonstrations conclude and the situation stabilizes, your security personnel will be reinstated, allowing you to resume your responsibilities. We are working diligently to ensure that officers maintain their dignity while providing governors with adequate security," Gachagua assured.

He also called upon the governors to express their satisfaction with timely revenue disbursements, a responsibility they shared vocally during periods of delay.

Gachagua reminded the governors, "When the revenue disbursements were delayed, your voices were heard far and wide. It is only fair to take two minutes to acknowledge the promptness of the current disbursements. Transparency works both ways – if you raised your concerns, you must also inform the public when the issues are resolved."

The withdrawal of security personnel had impacted the security detail of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, four governors, and over 50 Members of Parliament. Gachagua emphasized the government's commitment to restoring security once stability is achieved, ensuring that both officers and governors are treated with respect and dignity.
