Nairobi, August 9, 2023 - Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah's absence caused a delay in the much-anticipated bipartisan talks between President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga's teams, as the country looks to address the ongoing political impasse.
Unexpected Delay Due to Bad Weather
Despite being designated as the co-chair of the 10-member bipartisan committee tasked with resolving the political deadlock that has gripped the nation, Kimani Ichung'wah's absence was conspicuous as the talks commenced. The Member of Parliament had accompanied President Ruto to a rally in Naromoru earlier in the day, which impacted his ability to join the meeting on time.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, acting as a stand-in for Ichung'wah, explained that the MP faced travel disruptions due to adverse weather conditions. She assured the gathering that Ichung'wah was en route and would arrive shortly.
Azimio Team's Early Arrival
The Azimio team, led by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, had arrived at the meeting venue ahead of schedule. However, the proceedings were postponed to accommodate Ichung'wah's delayed arrival.
"He is now airborne and we are expecting him any moment from now," Governor Mbarire stated, underscoring the urgency to commence the discussions.
Azimio's Commitment to Constructive Dialogue
In his opening address, Kalonzo Musyoka conveyed Azimio's commitment to engaging in productive negotiations with Kenya Kwanza, a position previously put forward by President Ruto's team. He emphasized that Azimio would approach the talks in good faith and seek equitable outcomes for all Kenyans.
The Azimio principal reiterated the opposition's stance on not pursuing power-sharing with Kenya Kwanza, focusing instead on addressing crucial issues facing the country both presently and in the future.
Ensuring Positive Outcomes
Governor Mbarire, in her role as a surrogate for Ichung'wah, echoed the sentiments expressed by Kalonzo. She indicated that the discussions would center on critical topics brought to the table and emphasized the mutual commitment to the betterment of the nation and its citizens.
As the talks proceed with renewed anticipation following Ichung'wah's impending arrival, all eyes are on the outcomes of these discussions and their potential impact on the political landscape of Kenya.
