On Friday, Kisumu residents, led by the People Power Movement, will participate in a peaceful protest to commemorate Saba Saba Day. In a statement, the movement called on the police to uphold the law and maintain professionalism to prevent any violence.
The peaceful march will begin at Kondele and proceed to the town center, where a petition addressing the issues faced by the community will be delivered to the county commissioner on behalf of the President of Kenya.
The People Power Movement, composed of concerned citizens, civil society members, grassroots organizations, business sector representatives, women's groups, youth groups, residential associations, student bodies, revolutionaries, and patriotic Kenyans, urged citizens to participate in large numbers.
Saba Saba Day is traditionally observed to commemorate the protests held across Kenya on July 7, 1991, demanding the expansion of democratic space and the establishment of a multi-party system.
According to the organization, Saba Saba Day has become an opportunity for the masses of Kenya to speak truth to power and address various issues that require improvement.
The statement highlighted the historical significance of Saba Saba Day, noting that it has often been a day of resistance against oppression met with repression.
The protest aims to raise concerns over the high cost of living, skyrocketing food prices, excessive taxation, corrupt government officials, and the use of excessive force by the police.
The People Power Movement emphasized that every citizen has the right to peacefully protest and present petitions to the government and duty bearers. They reiterated their commitment to conducting the protest in accordance with the law.
The movement called upon Kisumu residents to maintain peace throughout the process and emphasized their intention to engage in a peaceful and lawful demonstration to express their grievances and seek necessary improvements from the government.
