One suspect was shot dead in a fierce shootout with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The DCI on Saturday, March 4, stated that the thug, ferried by a boda boda, engaged the police in the shoot-out on a highway towards Nairobi West.

In the Friday night March 3 incident, the thugs attempted to hide in the traffic to evade the police. On seeing that the officers were narrowing down on them, the thugs opted to shoot in the air to create a distraction.

Scared motorists remained stuck in their vehicles as the gunshots echoed in the air.

When the sleuths noted that the thugs in a motorbike had stopped, while attempting to pass through the traffic, one of them swiftly alighted and pursued the culprits.

He used the traffic as a decoy too as other detectives sought to contain the situation.

"The Corporal on duty, went after the bike with long strides as motorists stuck in traffic stared in awe as the action unfolded," DCI detailed.

All efforts to demand the thugs to stop were futile as they tried to escape. However, the corporal on duty pounced on them and brought the bike down.

Following the altercation, the boda hit the pavement throwing the thug onto the pavement and the rider speeding off to save his life.

The solo thug failed to surrender to the police and opted to reach for his gun. This resulted in the officers spraying him with bullets sending him flying to the ground.

In a statement issued by DCI, a pistol with 11 rounds of ammunition was recovered from the fallen thug.

On Friday night March 3, the detectives shot dead one thug from Githuria 44 estate who was captured on CCTV robbing a local at gunpoint before fleeing on a boda.

"As the officers closed in on the bike, the armed thug suddenly disembarked and started running on foot towards a footpath while shooting towards the officers.

"Left with no other option, one of the crime busters opened fire and silenced him, bringing the chase to an end," DCI reported.

Conclusively, DCI urged the public to anonymously share any information that may help enhance security in the country.
