Women and Married Kenyans Top Bribers List - Report

A report by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has revealed that women paid more bribes than men in 2021.

The National Ethics and Corruption Survey 2021 released on Friday, December 30, captured the average economic bribe by socio-economic characteristics.

In terms of gender, females paid an average of Ksh8,818 in bribes in 2021 as compared to their male counterparts who dished out Ksh5,410.

Marital Status

Married Kenyans topped the charts with handing incentives of Ksh6,775 while couples who separated gave the least bribes averaging Ksh4,150.

Unmarried citizens gave Ksh6,665 in bribes while divorced, and the widowed parted with Ksh5,964 and Ksh4,198 respect.

Status

According to EACC, bribes given on behalf of children topped the list at Ksh13,341 while the mean given by spouses stood at Ksh11,771.

Heads of households gave the least tokens at Ksh4,587 while those categorized as others issued an average Ksh3,905.

Level of Education

Most learned Kenyans and the least educated gave more bribes. Those who with no academic papers gave an average of Ksh49,251.09.

Holders of postgraduate degrees came in second at Ksh15,709.  On the flip side, those with an informal education gave the least bribes - Ksh1,830.

Kenyans who reached to primary, secondary, college and graduates parted with Ksh3,697, Ksh6,095, Ksh4,374, and Ksh7,086 in bribes respectively.

Unemployment Status

Kenyans working in the private sector topped the list with Ksh9,085 in incentives followed by students at  Ksh8,279.

Unemployed Kenyans dished out Ksh6,243 in 2021. Retired Kenyans gave the least amount of bribes - Ksh2,153. 

In terms of age, adults aged above 55 years gave the highest bribes at Ksh11,881.63  followed by those aged between 25-34 used Ksh7,367 to get services.
